Medicare is a great program — but that doesn’t mean your plan will always stay the right fit. Your health needs, prescriptions, or even doctors can change over time. The good news? You’re not stuck.

If you’re wondering how to change your Medicare plan, here’s everything you need to know about when, how, and why to make the switch.

Why You Might Want to Change Your Medicare Plan

People change Medicare plans for all sorts of reasons. Maybe:

  • Your prescriptions have changed and your current plan doesn’t cover them affordably.

  • Your doctor is no longer in-network.

  • You’ve moved to a new county or state.

  • You want extra benefits like dental, vision, or hearing.

  • You’re just not happy with your current plan’s costs or coverage.

Whatever the reason, it’s important to know when and how to make changes the right way.

When You Can Change Your Medicare Plan

There are specific times each year (and a few special exceptions) when you’re allowed to change your Medicare plan.

1. Medicare Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)

🗓 October 15 – December 7 each year

During this time, anyone with Medicare can:

  • Switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage (Part C) plan

  • Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another

  • Drop Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare

  • Join, switch, or drop a Part D prescription drug plan

Your new plan takes effect January 1 of the next year.

2. Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (MA OEP)

🗓 January 1 – March 31 each year

If you already have a Medicare Advantage plan, you can:

  • Switch to a different Medicare Advantage plan, or

  • Go back to Original Medicare (and add a Part D plan if you want)

This gives you a “second chance” if you realize early in the year that your current plan isn’t working out.

3. Special Enrollment Periods (SEP)

Certain life events trigger a Special Enrollment Period that allows you to change your plan outside the normal windows.

You may qualify if:

  • You move to a new area with different plans

  • You lose coverage (like Medicaid or employer insurance)

  • Your plan changes its contract with Medicare

  • You qualify for Extra Help or Medicaid (dual eligible)

Each SEP has its own rules, but the bottom line is: if your situation changes, you might not have to wait for AEP.

3. Changing Your Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

If you are on a Medicare supplement and want to change to a different carrier, you can do so anytime of the year. However, in most cases you will need to qualify through health underwriting in order to do so.

Why change your Medicare supplement:

  • Save money on your monthly premium

    • All Medicare supplements are standardized and provide the same coverage respective to the plan that you are on (i.e. Plan G, Plan F, Plan N, etc.)

    • All Medicare supplements use the same doctors and hospital networks

  • Your Medicare supplement may not be available in your area if you recently moved to a new state

How to Change Your Medicare Plan

Changing your plan is simpler than you think. Here’s how it works:

  1. Review your current plan — Check your coverage, costs, and provider network.

  2. Compare new options — Look at other plans in your area to see if you can save money or get better coverage for your needs.

  3. Check your prescriptions — Make sure your medications are covered affordably.

  4. Enroll in your new plan — You can do this online, by phone, or through a licensed insurance agent like us at Mountaineer Health and Life

💡 Tip: Never cancel your old plan before your new one starts—it’s best to have continuous coverage.
