If you missed the deadline to change your Medicare plan during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), you’re not alone—and you’re not out of options. While AEP is the main time each year to make changes, there are still situations where you may be able to switch plans or take steps to protect yourself until the next enrollment window.

Let’s walk through what happens if you missed Medicare AEP and what you can do next.
What Is Medicare AEP?
Medicare’s Annual Enrollment Period runs from October 15 through December 7 each year. During AEP, people can:
Switch Medicare Advantage plans
Move from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage (or vice versa)
Change Medicare Part D prescription drug plans
Any changes made during AEP take effect on January 1 of the following year.
Once December 7 passes, most people can’t make changes unless they qualify for another enrollment period.

Option 1: Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (OEP)
If you’re currently enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, you may still have an opportunity to make one change during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, which runs from:
📅 January 1 – March 31
During this time, you can:
Switch from one Medicare Advantage plan to another
Drop Medicare Advantage and return to Original Medicare
Add a Part D plan if you return to Original Medicare
⚠️ Important: You cannot switch from Original Medicare to Medicare Advantage during OEP.
Option 2: Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs)
You may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) if certain life events occur.
Common Medicare SEPs include:
Moving outside your plan’s service area
Losing employer or union coverage
Gaining or Losing Medicaid eligibility
Your plan leaving Medicare or changing its contract
Qualifying for or losing Extra Help
SEPs allow you to make changes outside of AEP, but the timing and options depend on the specific event.
👉 Many people qualify for SEPs without realizing it—especially after income or coverage changes.
Option 3: Review Your Coverage and Prepare for the Next Enrollment Window
If you don’t qualify for OEP or an SEP, the best move is to review your current coverage and prepare early for the next opportunity.
This includes:
Checking if your doctors are still in-network
Reviewing prescription drug coverage
Understanding upcoming costs like copays and deductibles
Identifying gaps in coverage that could cause unexpected expenses
Being proactive now helps avoid rushed decisions during the next AEP.
Option 4: Consider Supplemental Coverage for Added Protection
If you’re locked into your current Medicare plan, supplemental products may help manage out-of-pocket costs.
Depending on your situation, options may include:
Hospital Indemnity plans
Cancer, Heart Attack, and Stroke plans
Accident coverage
Short-Term Care plans
These plans can provide cash benefits to help offset expenses while you wait for your next chance to change plans.
When Can You Change Your Medicare Plan Again if You Missed the Medicare Enrollment Deadline?
If none of the options above apply, you’ll be able to make changes during the next Medicare AEP, which starts October 15.
Knowing your options now gives you time to make confident, informed decisions instead of feeling stuck. Mountaineer Health and Life Insurance can help you review your coverage options!
